Information about Submissions

The University of Utah Press invites submission of manuscripts in anthropology and archaeology, linguistics, Mesoamerica, Native America, Utah and Western history, Mormon studies, Middle East studies, natural history, Utah and regional guidebooks, and general titles of regional interest. We ask that a complete manuscript be submitted and that it be accompanied by an abstract and a resume or vitae. Xerox copies of photographs and drawings are acceptable. If Press staff considers the manuscript to be promising, it is sent to at least two qualified readers for a more comprehensive evaluation. All manuscripts considered for publication must also be presented to the University Press Faculty Advisory Committee for acceptance or rejection. If the work is accepted, a contract is issued.

Prospectus Guidelines

The prospectus or book proposal introduces you and your work to the editor and the press. Depending upon the type of project being proposed, this document might be as compressed as a two-page letter or as extensive as a multi-page report. But whatever form is appropriate to represent the work you're planning to submit, please include the following information:

  1. Describe your book. What is your purpose in writing it? What will be its significant contribution or features?
  2. If this is an edited volume, what is the source of the contributions? Have they been previously published or presented at a conference? Have you investigated what, if anything, you will have to pay for permissions?
  3. Describe the audience or market for the book. Scholars in a particular field? Or a general or trade readership? Both? Any potential for the book as a course adoption text?
  4. Have books been published recently that are similar to yours? What makes yours different?
  5. How will the book be organized? Include a table of contents if one is available.
  6. Describe the book's other attributes: estimated number of manuscript pages (double-spaced, new courier typeface); number of photographs (color or black and white); number of illustrations (maps, graphs, tables, drawings).
  7. If the book is not complete, how long do you estimate you'll need to finish it?
  8. Include a representative sample of your work, such as a chapter or the introduction or preface. Have any parts of the book been previously published?
  9. Include your curriculum vitae or r?sum?.
  10. If you would like the materials you've sent returned, enclose an SASE with appropriate postage.
However, as a courtesy, please tell us if your proposal is currently being considered by other presses.
